| This project integrates the Institute's environmental education programs, launched
13 years ago. The Environmental Education Centers benefit thousands of people
in the 25 cities where they are present. So far, 700,000 people of all ages,
including teachers, have been involved in the activities that include courses,
exhibits and debates on the environment and aim at promoting social conservation
consciousness, particularly among the young.
The Centers are typically 600 sq. ft. areas, maintained with the support of
local governments and NGOs, equipped with television set, computer, printer
and informative handouts. They conduct projects specific to each community and
in 2004 served 10,000 people directly and another 20,000 indirectly, strengthening
their knowledge and power to defend the environment.
Late in 2004 Unibanco promoted, in São Paulo, the First Conference on
Self-Sustainability of the Environmental Education Centers. The event conducted
by the Capacitação Solidária NGO, gathered 26 managers
from 13 centers to exchange their experiences and receive guidance on planning,
executing and assessing environmental education projects.
